Dam Construction Impacts Fish Biodiversity in a Subtropical River Network, China

چکیده

Dams and diversions are a primary threat to freshwater fish biodiversity, including the loss of species restructuring communities, often resulting in taxonomic homogenization (increased similarity) over time. Mitigating these impacts requires strong scientific understanding both patterns drivers diversity. Here, we test whether different components biodiversity have changed response major dam construction, predictable as function key environmental factors Gan River Basin, China. The results showed that total native alpha diversity declined from historical period (pre-dam) current (post-dam). A 29 lost, while 6 alien were gained We found evidence for faunal with slight (1%) increase similarity among river basins period. Additionally, revealed significant associations between drainage length, area, average air temperature, beta This study provides new insight into change broader Yangtze Basin helps inform management efforts seeking slow, even reverse, trajectories change.

Assessment of Fish Biodiversity in Oni River, Ogun State, Nigeria

For the purpose of sustainable exploitation of the fishery resources of Oni River, Ogun State, Nigeria, the fish biodiversity assessment was carried out. This was conducted by enumerating and identifying fish species composition, measuring the fish length, fish weight, assessing the fish abundance and biomass, determining the length-weight relationships and the length-frequency of the fishes. A...

Fish Fauna in Iberian Mediterranean River Basins: Biodiversity, Introduced Species and Damming Impacts

1. We used a basin approximation to analyse distribution patterns of different components of biodiversity (taxonomic richness, endemicity, taxonomic singularity, rarity) and conservation status of freshwater fish fauna in 27 Mediterranean Iberian rivers. 2. Basin area alone explained more than 80% of variation in native species richness. Larger basins featured not only a higher number of native...

A modelling methodology for natural dam-river network systems

An approach for modelling a natural dam-river network system is proposed in this paper. Generally, the relationships among the variables of a natural dam-river network system are complex and difficult to be described. In this paper, we present some simple first principle relationships among the water levels measured at a limited number of points of the network system such that a model is achiev...

A spatial assessment of hydrologic alteration caused by dam construction in the middle and lower Yellow River, China

The ‘range of variability approach’ (RVA) and mapping technique are used to investigate the spatial variability of hydrologic alterations (HA) due to dam construction along the middle and lower Yellow River, China, over the past five decades. The impacts of climate variability on hydrological process have been removed during wet and dry periods and the focus is on the impacts of human activitie...

Establishing baseline biodiversity data prior to hydroelectric dam construction to monitoring impacts to bats in the Brazilian Amazon

The modification of Amazonian rivers by the construction of megaprojects of hydroelectric dams has widely increased over the last decade. Robust monitoring programs have been rarely conducted prior to the establishment of dams to measure to what extent the fauna, and its associated habitats may be affected by upcoming impacts. Using bats as models, we performed analyses throughout the area unde...
